MacOS X is based on a UNIX kernel. All previously written MacOSes were Apple
software with what is called single threaded operation. Bottom line is that
the Apple OSes were easily crashed when an app crashed or misbehaved. The
UNIX kernel is a miniature operating systemrunning under the Apple software
that allows an app to crash without bringing down the entire ball O' wax. It
is therefore more stable. It includes new software and runs a bit faster for
a few things, but has no compelling reason for someone happy with their Mac
to upgrade to it.
