I agree with your statement completely. I have had nothing but problems
with Jaz drives. However, I have had great success with CD-R and
floptical drives. In fact, we use floptical drives all over our school
district for 'serious' backups. We've never had any sort of media
corruption problem with these drives.

We have been using the 640mb Fujitsu Dynamo, but they now have a 1.3gb
Fujitsu Dynamo (dual USB/SCSI) in the $350 range. But to be honest, the
best price/performance ratio is probably going to be with a CD-R or
CD-RW. If you have super huge files, you may want to look more seriously
at the Dynamo 1.3gb (for extremely large files, you can use Stuffit
Deluxe to break apart the archive into transferrable segments).

I also have a 1.5gb SyJet at home that I never use but it sure as heck
works better than the Jaz. Those are going for about $40 on eBay, but
the cartridge price is prohibitive.
