Brief correction:<) I believe the quote "The better to keep your mouth shut" was a Benjamin Franklin item. I used it many a time when the three sons were growing up.
I also used the following, also attributed to him, at apropos moments:: "When I was 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have him around. By the time I was 21, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in seven years. As the years pass fewer person recognize the "Pogo" quotes that I'm so fond of. Such as "Deacon Muskrat's, "Those people that would cause wars; give me the 'Bomb' and I'd cram peace down their war mongering throats!"
