Hmm. A bit of weirdness with the CD driver, the System or the CDROM drive
I'd guess. It might all not be stable enough to try the above methods.

If that's an option, most definitely. The retail CD would still be subject
to the same fate as the iMac CD (computer perhaps not wanting to read it)
but at least then you could boot from the CD and nuke and pave, fixing most
likely everything. Save whatever you need now, even if only to floppies.
