Although the above is true with regard to PowerComputing tweaking
components to get the most out of them, that's only partly right in this
case.

The PowerCenters (and PowerCurves. PowerTowers and PowerCenterPro's) are
variations of the Apple 'Catalyst' mobo, aka PowerMac 7200.
Apple never did develop removable processor technology for it's 7200's,
probably to keep the heat off it's 7500/7600/7300 series desktops. Apple
said it was to keep costs down, but somehow that just doesn't fly, and
Apple has a history of 'hobbling' less expensive computer in it's lineup to
justify the expense of it's flagship models eg...the Mac 2Si, a computer
that was held to 20 mHz and 4 ram slots to prevent it cutting into 2Ci
sales.

Power Computing took the basic 7200 mobo, and, among other impressive
engineering feats, made it capable of using removable cpu's by adding
something called a 'drty' line to their removable cpus. This was also done
by PowerLogix, NewerTechnology, XLR8, and other third party cpu
manufacturers, in fact everyone but...Apple...=).

The Apple cards from the 7x00s, 8x00's and 9x00's will work in the
PowerWaves and PowerTowerPro's due they being based on the Nitro & Tsunami
boards, which did have removable cpu technology.

Recently, I installed a 120 mHz 601 cpu daughtercard (complete with Peltier
cooler) from a PowerCurve 120 (circa Mac 7200 75mHz and 90mHz) into a Mac
7500/100. It works flawlessly, and shows once again how poorly Apple served
it's customer base before the clones came along and showed the faithful
what they were being denied.

Cheers...Michael
