One solution: Use Google as a web-based search engine instead.

Indeed, the Google Advanced Search page gives you a lot of power, including
phrase searching and news article searching:
http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Also, to search current and archived newsgroups:
http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search?hl=en
