I'm using an OS 9.0 CD from a G4 I think...

it snot in front of me at the moment...

I also booted from another cd and upgraded the install to 9.1 hoping htat would work,
it didnt...

It has 320 MB of RAM (plenty I think...)

Only a NIC card in the PCI slots, This was all done on a blank hdd so there is no
previous OS, although did try it on an 8.6 install and gave up. I dont have conflict
catcher, but this seems unnesisary as the install was on a Blank drive?

It does have a 604e cpu in it, but its only 180 Mhz...

Rob how much do you want for your 604e 240 Mhz CPU from the PCP?

I dont have $140 to spend on a G3 I'm a college student and so I need to spend under
like $40

any other suggestions?

FIRST : What OS 9 disk are you using? If its for an iMac ... that's your
 problem. Read no further.
Like the Performas and Quadras (they were a breed apart.) its s/w is different.

There were several glitches meinself encountered with OS 9.0.4 .... OS 9.1 is a
 vast improvement
but both had some conflict with older apps. Many trouble shooting hours later,
 my OS 9.1 works like
a charm.

In My Not So Humble Opinion (IMNSHO) It (OS 9.1) is the best Mac OS to Date.
  I've OS X on my
eMac ... and though it may be "Cockpit Trouble" ... this old Fart hasn't been
 this frustrated since
the time he was using "D Base II" on a K-Pro.

How much RAM do you have? Have you tried booting with extensions off? What's in
 the PCI Slots?
The drivers may need to be updated.

You didn't mention your previous OS .... There may be some defunct extensions
 still lingering about
causing problems. I've forgotten how many upgrades that were necessary on mine,
 but it was a bunch.
Do have Conflict Catcher 8 ? If so disable. Extensions until it will boot up.
 Configure it to get on
the net. Then open S/W upgrade and start upgrading.

Try booting up with Norton Utilities, Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro. My
 advantage was I'd the
latest versions, at the time, of those plus Spring Cleaning. and Conflict
 Catcher 8.

If it's a PCP, I thought all the Pro Models had a 604e.

I've PCP 210 and PCP 240 boards. Pulled from running units to be replaced by
 Sonnet 500 MHz G3
cards.

What's the going price Michael ?

Joe being the "Good Guy that I am I must tell you ... first ... check the
prices for a G3 card on
amazon. Someone quoted a price the other day that was so cheap I nearly bought
 one and I don't even
need one. Seems like it was $140 total, postage and all ... It will be a lot
 faster.

Also get a used ATI Rage 128 Graphics Accelerator card.
