I think using any computer for any length of time without the ability to
install a fresh copy of the OS is living on the edge, unless this is
just a toy.

In any event, using a computer with an unknown OS (i.e. one you didn't
install yourself or a factory install that's been used for years) is
still rolling the dice with respect to performance or reliability, if
not usability.

You can use any retail (and a few non-retail) Mac OS CDs that your model
supports.
