James,

I have a PCP 210 upgraded to G3/400 via PowerLogix;
running 8.6 w/OEM Adaptec 2940UW and multiple external UW drives...
as well as scanner and Zip on 50-pin motherboard bus.

Do you mean using external SCSI bus from Ultra SCSI card?
Not the external standard 50-pin SCI connector from motherboard.

What drives are connected to card internally?
My PCP 210 had only the internal Seagate 'narrow' drive.

If so, what SCSI card do you have? Adaptec 2930?
Is card Ultra, or Ultra-wide...
What are limitations on SCSI chain length
UW is 1.5 meters - roughly 5 feet

Have you checked drive ID's w/SCSIProbe (freeware)?
Any duplications/
Should have 5.2 for updated results.

What driver/formatter are you using for external disks?
Did you upgrade beyond OEM FWB PE version supplied by Power Computing?
That version is not, I think, compatible w/8.6...

I have a Seagate external UW drive that gives me problems from time-to-time
prefaced usually by a loud 'CLICK.' Is that similar?

What are the drives...from SCSIProbe?
My internal original Seagate is ST52160N...

'Board Control' is a control panel unknown to me...
Do you mean 'PowerDomain Control'?
If so, what version are you using?

Do settings follow User Guide recommendations?

And what are settings... mine are
  - for 2940UW - NOT 2930, which may be different.
'Termination' - Automatic
'Initiator ID' - 7 (motherboard)
'Parity' - ON

From pull-down menu 'Board / Set Target Options'
  - NO drive selected; Ultra SCSI check box 'checked'
All drives show as
Synchronous Transfer Rate - 20 Mhz
SCSI Disconnection - Enabled
Wide Negotiation - Enabled

Another source of info is PowerWatch <http://www.powerwatch.com/>
You need to register - but it's free...
Several boards there may be helpful.
