I suspect this error is related to a software issue rather than a failing
piece of hardware.

One source describes Type 3 errors like this:
"This is called an illegal instruction error. It means that the MAC tried to
execute an instruction that isn't part of its standard vocabulary. The cause
may be an out-of-date system extension or hard disk driver."

Some sources also suggest updating your version of Quicktime.
