Try this:  disconnect the monitor from the computer (signal cable).  Then
start or restart the system leaving the monitor disconnected.  Allow it
enough time to boot up fully.  Press the power key on the keyboard and
listen for the alert. This will be the dialog box asking to sleep, restart
or shutdown, etc.  Press enter since shutdown is the default.  After the
system shuts down reconnect the monitor and start back up.  Starting with
the monitor disconnected _should_ force the system back to 640x480 and then
you can reset it accordingly.
