John, The obvious of course is that the drive is dead as a door knob. Be careful with media, the media may get damaged when inserted in the drive if the drive head attempts to engage the platter. Another issue is the SCSI ID or termination on the drive may be set incorrectly. Even for internal drives they still need to be terminated.
