One good source of used equipment can be found at your local
university or (less often) community college. A while back, I picked
up a Sun 21" inch triniton for about $25. That's less than fifty
cents a pound! After buying a $35 VGA to sun adapter, I was in
business. It was tricky to set up because of resolution limitations
and color depths that my stock PCP 240 supports, but other than that,
it's been a peach.

If you are near a state's surplus sales depot, you may be able to
find similar deals there. Although, that will usually only be office
stuff with smaller monitors.
