Yes, a vga monitor works in most/all resolutions with that connector. 
If you want to use other VGA monitors with older macs, it's best to 
build your own converter, as most of the DIP switch and dial adapters 
are pretty lame.  I have a wiring diagram that will give you all 
resolutions with no switches to convert the 15 wide apple to 15pin 
vga.
