Perhaps it was qoing south to begin with. Floppy drives are governed by a controller chip on the motherboard; its driver is built-in. There was once a discussion on Quadlist about resuscitating floppy drives. It involved dismantling and getting the "gunk" out of the cam that actuates the read/write head. Use Drilube instead of grease. Commercial floppy cleaner disks used in conjunction with a utility (Tech Tool) that commands the head to make several passes across the isopropyl alcohol-soaked felt should clean out dirt.
