Since you are only linking two computers you only need a "Crossover Cable" ... Not a "Patch" cable. There is a difference in the patch cables used in an Ethernet Network with a Hub.
You merely connect the two with the Crossover Cable to the respective Ethernet Ports. On each, go to the AppleTalk Control Panel and Select "ETHERNET".
Now, Open the "FILE SHARING" control Panel and note the "Computer Name" and "pass word. If you are going to be the only one using them. Make it Something Simple (to cut out a bunch of typing) like name one "Rod's #1" and the other "Rod's #2". Use a three letter password, the same for both (like "ROD"). In the FILE SHARING" Control Panel open the Users and Groups folders. Name the Guest "Rod #2. Use same Password.
Open the Chooser and select "AppleShare". Set up the Computer with the modem as the "SERVER".
Do this with both and turn on FILE SHARING on on both Computers FILE SHARING CONTROL PANELS. Now the Folder for the other computer will mount on your desk top.
