This does not directly address the noise problem with PTP cooling fans but
is perhaps related. Several years back I decided that the standard
arrangement for fans on my PTP 225 was not removing enough heat (I had
installed extra drives including Zip, Jaz and 2 extra hard drives, a USB
and a firewire card, and had maxed the RAM). A convenient fix involved
replacing the speaker from its location on bottom front with an extra fan.
It is mounted to blow air into the box and is powered with a feed-through
power adapter which plugs into one of the standard four prong power plugs
(using only the red and black lines). Since I use an external speaker with
the backside jack, I lost nothing by removing the internal speaker. The
louvre at the bottom of the front bezel is quite adequate for air inlet to
the fan. I have not done actual temperature measurement, but have the
subjective sense of stabler operation than previously... no freeze ups or
failed reads with the removables.
