Here are some of my observations and also what I read or found out from the
balloon help and popup balloons.

For the write thru: It is recommended to enable the write-through mode for
pre G3 machines. "Some devices are incompatible with the backside cache if
not in the write-through mode" Powerlogix ballon help

Now for the motherboard cache:
I have had 2 different experinces with it. I had a Powerlogix G3 300 in my
Power Tower Pro. The manual said to remove it since using it is slower than
the backside cache. I did that and ran without the motherboard cache with no
problems for 4 years. I did save the cache incase I later needed it.

I recently picked up an XLR8 G4 450 new in the box off of ebay. I install it
with the motherboard cache removed and the memory interleaved as normal. I
tried to boot but no luck. Installed the G3 back in and it booted with no
problem. So I sent it back and got a replacement from the guy. I thought the
board may be bad. Got the new one tried it again and it wouldn't boot
either. So, I look around and found xlr8yourmac.com and read about some
problems and one solution was to de-interleave the memory. I did this and
the machine booted fine.

I wanted to have the speed gain of the interleaved memory though. So a
little more searching and tinkering. I next tried putting the motherboard
cache back in and it booted up fine. I went to the XLR8 control panel and
did a software disabling of the motherboard cache. It is advised to disable
it and use the quicker backside cache.

Since everything is working fine why not just let it be? No, I'll be brave
and try one more little thing. I've got it to work I'll just revert back if
it doesn't boot. I re-interleaved the memory and booted up and it worked.

Backside cache speed:
With the G3 card I had it was rated at 1:1 and it ran fine at 300/300. With
the G4 card that was rated at 2:1 (450/250) it was a different story though.
When copying files from my other networked macs the computer would lockup at
times. I read the faq and it said to back off the cache speed to solve the
problem. I did so and this worked with it now running at a 5:2 (450/180)
ratio. I have one of the dip switch adjustable cards that allows you to
speed up or slow down the processor. The faq says to slow the processor down
and try kicking back up the backside cache again. I did this and am now
running fine at a 2:1 (440/220) ratio. "The small loss to the processor is
made up by a larger gain to the backside cache" XLR8 manual

You will just have to test out the backside cache speed and see what works
the best for you machine.

I don't have the option for adusting the speed of the memory. You don't want
to set it to low (faster memory) because, your slower memory will not work
properly.

Please forgive any misspellings.
