An alternative to holding down the shift key is to hold down the space bar. If you have Extensions Manager installed, it should call up the Extensions Manager instead of continuing the boot process. Once you get this far, you can try turning off all extensions but the ones provided by Apple. It's an option in the pop-down menu in the Extensions Manager. If you can boot the computer then, then you know that you have an extension conflict somewhere else. At that point, you can start turning on extensions a package at a time (a package is a group of extensions/control panels that ought to be turned on or off together. For instance, QuickTime has a whole group of extensions and a control panel that can all be turned on an off with one click. Viewing as packages is also an option in the pop-up menu when you launch Extensions Manager at startup). You keep turning them on, and continuing reboots, and then reboot again, until you suddenly crash, and then you know that the last group of extensions you turned on is where at least part of your problem lies. If you get this far, please let us know which extension or group is causing your problems. I do know that my CD extensions used to cause me problems, but that was because I had a bad CD drive! So sometimes things are more complicated than they first appear... For instance, another time, I couldn't get past the launching of the Finder without freezing. I eventually learned that leaving off AppleScript allowed me to launch the whole way, and then, after some pondering, realized that there are some AppleScript Additions not in the Extensions folder. I started removing them, and discovered that an Addition called Akua Sweets was my problem. (It broke in OS 9.2) So you might want to look there also for your problem if other solutions stump you... I've shared a lot, so please, if your head is swimming, write for clarification.
