The only virus I know of that actually works under OS 8 is the one that requires the data CD auto-play function turned on in the QT control panel. Simply uncheck that option, and don't ever load the one MacAddict CD that actually had this virus, and I think you would be safe from viruses on your computer. :-) And yes, I'm serious. Back in those days, the only viruses that existed for the Mac were ones that were passed by attaching themselves to executable application programs, like nVir, its variants, and others of this ilk. I don't believe these viruses can work under OS 8 and above, at least not on HFS+ hard drives, and probably not with the System software. The viruses such as are spread today are of a different variety, and do not--cannot effect a Mac, specifically of your vintage. And you can bet that nobody today will bother to write a virus that is compatible only with Mac OS 8! Personally, while I had various virus programs for years, I never used them, and even now, on OS X, I don't use it. It's there, in case I need it, but I don't foresee it, and for my OS 9 Macs, I don't even have it installed... (and doubt I still have it). Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. Your Mac itself is an anti-virus program....
