Well if you can find manufacturing info about them that would be one way. The problem is that the description "DB25P to DB25P" could describe a serial cable, a parallel printer cable or a SCSI cable. And while a SCSI cable would likely work as a serial cable, a serial cable almost certainly would not.
It comes down to a knowledge of cables and looking at them to really be able to tell.
