1. No. I think your problem is either 3 things: a) PRAM battery low/dead b)drives not spinning up in time c) cache/ram dimm issues
2. Drives formatted should be readable on any ATA device. Higher speed drives are backward compatible with slower busses and vice versa. You can put a 66Mhz drive on a 133 bus or a 133 drive on a 66bus. Only issue may be the 'formatting software'. Sometimes in the wintel world, the drive manufacturer will include a special formatting software. Should not really be a problem on the mac unless your silver lining has a particular mentioned problem with a specific brand controller.
3. Most likely. Any area that you can improve speed, bus, drives, RAM (where available), CPU will improve performance to some extent and in some areas.
4. Possibly. check the mfr websites for incompatibilies. Also consult http://www.lowendmac.com and http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for reviews.

You didn't mention os version...
Greg

1) Is it likely to solve my problem?

2) Are drives formatted on one ATA card always readable with another? I know that they're sometimes not readable with Apple's built-in ATA, and vice versa.

3) Given the bus speed of the PTP, would the faster ATA card make much of a difference in tasks like digitizing video? I have an ixTV card for that purpose, but I haven't used it recently.

4) Can I have both ATA cards in the computer at once? I was thinking of doing this and comparing the performance with various combinations of cards and drives connected to them.
