I've got a PB180 with 88Mb RAM (2 DIMMS) and have recently added a USB

waws probably the difficulty, so I borrowed his 9.1 CD and replaced the

You would need to add USB support extensions with OS 8.6 or higher. Installing OS 9.1 would be the way to go for sure. You need the card in the Mac when installing the OS for all the needed extensions to be installed. Or you can download and install USB card support 1.4.1 from Apple.

I had a little bit of difficulty getting the PU to boot from the CD and
I remember some of the messages on this BBS over the past year
mentioning that there is a different combination to key in during a
boot in order to get the PU to boot from the CD.

You hold down the command(apple) + option + shit + delete keys for booting from the CD when starting the Mac. On most Macs you can use the "c" key only and you may try that. If it is an iMac install CD that may be your problem also.

Now when I boot I get a message, "Sorry, a system error occurred. "Turboread" bus error. To temporarily turn off extensions, restart & hold down the shift key.

What do I need to add, subtract, multiply or divide?

I have the original PowerComputing disc, am aware that when I bought
this unit there were some issues with needing to use an FWB Toolbox ,
or something like that, to get the CPU to recognize the CD player or
the HD, but I've been pulled away from my Mac upbringing for the past 6
or 7 years because the office is all PC (read piece of sh__!).
So all the special tricks I used to know intuitively are no longer
there. I'm getting another 64Mb DIMM to max out the RAM slots to 160
Mb, and looking for a G3 upgrade card.

I would back-up your files and use the original PowerComputing CD to initialize (wipe clean) the drive. Then try the OS 9.1 CD and see what happens. The drives in my clones never would let me use Apple's Drive Set-up and there was usually a warning about non-Apple hard disk drivers when I installed the OS but you can click ok to finish the install.

Any help for me? I can't remember where to go from here.

Suggestions/directions?

Also, when I get this fixed, what specs should I be looking for to put
in for the second HD. The #1 HD is only 1.1 Gb.

You may want to get the old Apple CD-ROM extension and stop using FWB's CD extension also, or swap the CD-ROM for an Apple unit. They are cheap and always bootable. SCSI hard drives are hit and miss on Apple full compatibility unless you buy an original Apple branded drive used and that will avoid alot of problems too. I found a couple of 4GB Seagate drives that were from Apple 9600's and they work well in my clone. For RAM check out OWC and Ebay (RamDirect) for 128MB sticks for less than $20.00.
