I can't remember the keys for rebuilding the desktop, I always had better luck using Tech Tool to rebuild desktop and zap PRAM.
You can download a TechTool Lite version for free on any of the download sites like MacUpdate, VersionTracker, etc...
You may be able to get it back by using the "arrange" under the view menu bar or the snap to grid function.
Probably need to rebuild the desktop anyway.
