I got one of my packages from Ebay today. It was a box of miscellaneous Mac stuff. Included was a boat-load of memory chips. I sorted them out and came up with several 168-pin DIMMs. I put each one in one at a time and powered up the PTP. All but two of the DIMM's worked fine. I ended up with one 64mb, one 32mb, about four 16mb and four 8mb DIMMs. I decided I would try to load up the PTP with the most RAM I could fit until my new 128mb DIMM's arrive next week.
I started with the 64mb peice. I put it in slot 1 and powered up. Read the memory in About this Mac and it showed the 64mb. Next, added the 32mb card in slot 2. Powered up again. No change in memory size. I figured out I had to use slot 5. After putting the 32mb in slot 5 I had 96mb total. Then I added a 16mb card to slot 2 and had 112mb of RAM. I continued this, adding the remaining 16mb DIMM's until finally I had 160Mb installed. As far as I can tell, when I get the new 256 installed I'll have 416mb of total RAM. Since these DIMMS are not identical they are not interleaved. Do you think there will be any problems using all this mixed memory? I ran the Mac through a few programs and everything seemed fine. Of course I can't tell if this is faster than interleaved or not. I've not used this thing long enough. It's much faster than my old Windows 95 setup on an old 486/66 with 16mb of RAM. Also in the box was a 3.5" SCSI hard drive, at 500mb. And an external usb Imation SuperDisk 120mb/1.8 combo floppy drive. Also a standard floppy and an Apple 600 CD drive. Three mice. A monitor cable. And two 604/604e daughter cards. All good stuff for playing around with. I'll be looking for a cable and power supply for the Imation SuperDisk. I wonder if I can use it on a PC since it's USB? The port connector looks like a small SCSI interface. Anyone have an idea of how to get a cable for this thing?
