It provides virtual desktops similar to those available in most unix/
linux window managers. The wikipedia entry explains it pretty well:

A lot of people find that app hiding and shrinking and Exposé together
are a reasonable alternative, but I've just got used to multiple
desktops. I have PM on one, my browser on another, others for Terminal
windows, text editor, iCal, etc, and can switch between them with kb
shortcuts.

And speaking of replacements for CTVD, I was just checking
versiontracker earlier and noticed that Virtue is once more being developed :)
