I've always been a big fan of standards. If you read the internet mail
standard, you'll see why PM uses the hard wrap option. That said, I am
myself beginning to wonder if anybody is working the standard anymore.
The hard wrap option is there for older mail relays, but having moved
from the computer industry into the telecom industry, I find it rare that
people are running older relays, which to me means it might be worthwhile
looking at this as an option. However, there are standards, and as long
as the recommended length in the standard is less than 80 characters, I'm
not sure it would be wise to go past that limit. If you are looking to
use longer line lengths and format documents, you might try using an HTML
formatted message. Now that is a whole other can of worms and people
either like it or don't like it, so you have to deal with that issue
instead of line length.
