I always use the three pane browser layout; which would seem to like it
does exactly what you say you want.

Same here

What does these do? (Nothing on my version of PM, and it's not attached
to any menu item in PM).

I use the trash can icon in the tool bar to delete the current message
and move to the next. Why does this not meet your criteria?

I think you can set your preferences to make this work as you expect. If
I mark a message as spam, it's the same as deleting the message except
it also tells your spam filtering program that the message should have
been spam.
