I had a similar experience after switching to Tiger, though 5.1 started working again after rebuilding the data base. The Beta would not launch. Jerome of PM engineering told me to remove all the PM keys from my users/home/ library/ preferences folder and then bless the beta with my original 5.1 key. This worked and now the beta is running fine.
