The real question is "what are you trying to solve?"

It seemed to me that the original post and much of the thread is about
addressing a performance problem, what's causing it, and how can it be
alleviated.

Changing protocols seems to be looking for a way to sidestep the issue
and find a workaround, which leaves the original issue unaddressed.

So, like I said, I think it really depends on what you're trying to
accomplish.
