Are you sure "view unread" is not checked, in the view menu, for the
trash folder? If not, you may try to rebuild the sort indices, from the
First Aid dialog (by launching PM with the command and option keys down).

Is it systematic for every message? If so, are you sure you did not
create two PowerMail accounts for the same POP account? Or if the account
is used for a mailing list, that you are not subscribed twice for this list?
