I've set PM to open the Recent Mail window, but not bring to the foreground. This works. However, if new mail comes in while I'm typing a message, the message I'm typing in still loses focus of sorts: there is no longer a blue edge around the typing area, and I need to waste a couple of mouse clicks to get the focus back there. Pretty annoying.
