I don't know why the slow-down occurs, but I think it involves Retrospect accessing a file which PowerMail has open. Presumably this can happen with other backup programs, although it might be dependent on a particular sequence or condition that doesn't happen with all programs. See if the slow-down starts immediately during or after a backup. One other point is that it is a good idea to quit PowerMail before a backup in any case. If you leave it running, your mail database may be backed up in an inconsistent state (if PowerMail writes to it while it is being backed up). In this case, the database you backed up may be useless if you ever need to restore it. Jeremy
