Have you installed any new software lately? I had strange (bad) things happen to PM when I accidentally installed an old version of Stuffit Deluxe (PM would crash on start). Reinstalling the correct Stuffit version fixed the problem. I suppose there's also a chance that a particular email or attachment is causing the crash. When you got mail via Mail.app, did you delete the existing messages from the server?
