No magic here. PowerMail always warn you before converting the database,
and suggests to make a backup.

You can try to move your 4 database files ("message database", "address
database", "setup database" and "server-side database") to another
folder, then remove the .old extensions to the backups, then drag the
"message database" file (previously "message database.old") to the
PowerMail 4 application icon. If it asks if you want to convert it, click
cancel (in this case, you have probably compacted your DB after having
converted it to PM 5 format), then export your whole database (from PM5)
to PowerMail Exchange format, and import that in PM 4.
