Well, yes it is possible, but involves some ResEditing ;-)

How can I remove the PowerMail icon to the left of emails in the message
list? 

Follow these steps:

1.Using ResEdit (MacResourceDog/ReKnife for OS X), open the file "User
Prefs" in your 'PowerMail Files' folder. Better yet, open a copy of that file.
2.In ResEdit (or the alternatives), open "PMpr" and "Hidden prefs" 
3.Change the option "disable message icon" to 1 
4.Save and restart PowerMail. The icons are gone
