I believe I had a problem like this at one point. How do your e-mail
messages end? Some services use a certain character combination in the
text to signal the end of each message, e.g. a period and two linefeeds.
It was something like that I had put in an automatic signature that made
the mail server hiccup on the messages I sent. If you can peek at the
transaction with a utility like tcpflow or such the opening responses
from the server may tell you exactly what it's expecting. A possibility...
