in your case I would setup the powerbook to NOT delete messages on server
after downloading and on the other computer (desktop) to DELETE AFTER
RETRIEVING. This means that the desktop will have all messages. And on
the powerbook you can delete what you want to keep it small.

I have somewhat such a setup, but I use mail so rarely on my desktop so I
use Apples Mail for my desktop 'once in a while' needed emails and keep
my full database on my powerbook. If I send out from Mail I automatically
send myself a CC of the message, like that I have all in my PM database.

I don't think you can set PM up to share just one database and
application via a shared folder or such.

If you want to really share the same database across a network, you might
want something like timbuktu or VNC or such which allows you to control
another computer remotely. But that is slow.
