Jérome found the problem - cocoAspell v. 1.3, an improvement to the
native Spelling Service, caused the crash. There was a version 1.4 that
might work, but the author has lost his website, and Google doesn't turn
up any alternative downloads. If anyone has a copy of v. 1.4, and it
works w/ PowerMail, I'd appreciate them emailing me a copy - it really
seemed to work much better than the built-in Spelling checker.
