It's essentially the same as performing defragmentation on a hard drive. The database file expands as you feed it more data, then it has holes in it as you delete selected messages. Saving additional messages and deleting more messages increases fragmentation of data. Compacting makes everything snug and cozy in the database file, and makes the file smaller. ---Jay
