I had something similar happen. What happened was that if I tried to open a new message then PM would crash. Soon I would get the 4 language kernal panic midway through startup.
I call to AppleCare and an Archive/Install of Panther fixed the problem, but it was a scary time for a bit. You should start PM with the Cmd-Option keys down and select the first 4 items. Startup from your Install Disc 1 and run Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, Backup. If the problem persists here's the sequence from AppleCare. Restart with Cmd-Option-O-F (Open Firmware), type "reset-all" without quotes. Restart with Cmd-Option-P-R (Zap PRAM), hold down for 4 chimes. Archive/Install Clean Install (I didn't have to go here.)
