Yup, Application Support was empty!  Jèrôme pointed it out for me
privately.  Until then, I even didn't know what's missing.  I logged into
root and copied the entire AddressBook directory to my main user account
followed by chown/chmod.  Now it is working :-)

The question is, how did it happen?!  This was newly formated disk and
OSX-only scratch install :-(
