This could be a system level problem masquerading as a PowerMail problem. Even if no other apps are acting flaky, if nothing being done in PowerMail appears to fix the issue, I would start up from the Mac OS X CD, run Disk Utility from the menubar (don't run the install :) ), and choose the First Aid tab to Veryify and the Repair Permissions. A run- through with Alsoft Disk Warrior might be a good thing, too. (FWIW, I've never had to do either of these on my OS X systems.
