APOP is a way to send your POP account password encrypted, so nobody can
pick it up during the "internet transfer" when you are checking your mail.

If neither APOP nor any other encryption is used, your password is sent
in plain text. Thus, can be picked up by anybody (in the right place and
using the right tools, that is...)
