This is true only for the last version. from the previous one I do have
a PM filter rule that says, "if sender is not in addressbook then run
SpamSieve macro 'move if spam'..." following the advice from a certain
Michael Tsai early this year ;-)

This rule still works for me with the latest SpamSieve version, though
its only interest is (perhaps) running a little bit faster as there is
no request passed to SpamSieve (nor from SpamSieve to AddressBook...)
for those mails immediately identified as friends right in PM (also,
this would allow one to avoid synchronizing with Apple's addressbook)

My advice would be, use with the standard default rule unless you really
find the filtering process is too time-consuming (only on a very slow
mac with lots of spam?).

Now, one last idea I just got: As M. Tsai says, the addressbook used for
SpamSieve "white-listing" operation is not PowerMail's one but Apple's:
then if you didn't set a synchronization from PM to Apple's Addressbook
it would be normal that SpamSieve does not recognizes your friends.
Check in Powermail > Preferences > synchronization that you at least
have checked "update Apple's addressbook automatically FROM
Powermail"...
