You can see what's new in the trash if, before you download your mail, you select all trash messages and label them to a certain priority. New additions will stand out. It helps if you rename the label "TRASH." This is clumsy and somewhat slow, but not too inconvenient if you write a script which will do that and then download the mail. I used the method for a long time until I developed good habits; I now so seldom accidentally trash messages that it isn't worth the trouble. I agree that it would be nice to have that feature built-in, but I suspect it wouldn't be easy to do.
