Yes, this occasionally crops up. You can see the number of messages and
unread messages in the divider between the list of messages in a folder
and the main message window. 

While I would also like to see the number of unread messages indicated
next to folder names, I have found that PM's approach is acceptable. The
fact that folders containing unread messages are displayed in bold is
satisfactory, although it does mean you can easily tell which folders
contains a recently received message, if you have several folders that
contain unread messages.
