I don't think that this an issue for mac.com, although that is the account it most frequently happens on.
I compose a message and click "send" then see the dialogue box that the message is being sent. Sometimes if I wait for 15 minutes, I will get a message that there is no smtp server. Othertimes no matter how long I wait, the send just hangs. About 10% of the time, if I stop the send and then immediately resend the message it goes right out. For the 90% of the occurances, I have to quit Powermail, restart selecting the option to purge the outgoing mail and then I can send the message. I have had to do this sometimes 4 or 5 times before the message will be sent. PowerMail 4.1.2, OS 9.1 (yes, I know, I will be working in OS X only as soon as I finish up a current big project).
