I've found that the scripts actually run pretty quickly. Faster that they seemed to in Entourage. YMMV. I've found that things in PM seem to grind to a halt when checking and downloading new mail occurs. As Wayne pointed out AppleScript is for doing stuff "under the hood". If you wait for user interaction things slow down more.
