I've recently started having this problem too. It's totally random, on a
G5, latest version of Powermail, English version. Nothing new installed
on the computer recently except for the latest version of Safari. No
haxies installed.

I've been experiencing this as well with my computer, a 2.16 GHz Intel
Core Duo MacBook Pro running the latest PM (5.5.3), English version,
using Tiger 10.4.10, with no haxies. Have tried re-installing PM as
well as trying PM in a new OS user-account, but it continues to occur,
seemingly at seemingly random.
